Questions to ask yourself before you purchase your table:
How many players will you normally have?
- Tables normally seat from six to ten people. It is best to plan on two less than what the table says it will hold?
What shape will work best for my area?
- Circular and octagon tables are designed for six to eight people depending on the diameter of the table. In my research I discovered that one complaint was that you might have to straddle a leg depending on how many players you have.
- A traditional oval shape is the one most familiar and will seat 9 – 10 people. However, ask yourself where you are going to place this table. Oval tables can be as much as 6 – 8 feet long. And then don’t forget the chairs and room to be able to move around.
The quality and the structure will have a huge impact on the enjoyment of your game.
- You will want to make sure that it features MDF construction so that it is sturdy.
- We usually refer to the top of the table as being ‘felt’ and some of the more inexpensive tables do have this. But, a good quality table is going to have ‘speed cloth’. It is smoother and more durable allowing the cards to glide better. Scotchguard can be sprayed on to the speed cloth to help repel unwanted spills.
- The rail/racetrack is an essential part of the table so make sure it is of suitable quality and is the look you want. Drink holders are nice but the biggest fault I found in almost all the tables I researched was that the holders were not deep enough. So don’t expect much in that area.
